Blues in the Schools Makes
Whispering Oaks Sing
by Reno Mussatto
Click on photo to see it larger

On October 15th, Doc Williamson, Rick Plate and The
Bird Dog Bobby Band (Bird Dog Bobby, Gary Whitehead
and Reno Mussatto) had Whispering Oaks Elementary
singing the blues and banging the drums. (see photo)

With the help of Nedra Goettling’s narration (see
photo), over 200 3rd graders and their teachers
learned about the roots of blues music, the different
instruments used and why the blues can feel so good!
As each song was performed, the artist’s history and
the song’s purpose and meaning were explained. Also,
the geography of different styles of blues from Delta
to West Coast, Chicago to Texas and how the blues has
influenced today’s popular music were discussed.

Beth Brissette, one of the Teachers at Whispering
Oaks and a big-time blues fan said that it was the best
time her class ever had while learning. She was in
attendance at the recent I.B.C. competition and
presented all the OBBS B.I.T.S. volunteers with tie-
dyed T-shirts and bags of hand- made cards of
appreciation from her students.

For those of you who haven’t yet participated in an
OBBS event, you are really missing out. The feeling I
got when I invited some of the students up to play the
drums was totally indescribable! (see photo) I’ve
performed for some great audiences over the course
of my career but never one as enthusiastic as these
students.

I’ve been told that we will soon have Blues In The
Schools request forms on the OBBS website**. In the
mean time, if you know of a school that could use a
little “blues education” please get their email or phone
number and contact me at
407-234-7185 or Poppareno@earthlink.net.

***As of the publication of this article, we do not have
the applications on the website.  They should be here
shortly, go ahead and contact Reno.

ZSHOWZ humbly announces An Act of
Love for Haiti – A Valentine’s Day to
Remember, to be held Sunday,
February 14 at Shriner’s Auditorium
located at 2300 Pembrook Drive in
Orlando, with eight bands performing
throughout the day. Doors open at noon,
first act begins at 1 p.m. A complete
schedule and line-up will be announced
within the week. Performing acts,
individuals working the event, and the
Shriner’s Auditorium are volunteering
their time and talents to make this a
success benefit. All proceeds to be
presented to a charity to be
determined that is actively involved in
Haitian relief and represented at the
event.

This Valentine’s Day is a great
opportunity for Central Florida to come
together and show real love to our
Haitian neighbors. A nominal $20
donation will be asked at the door in
exchange for an afternoon full of top-
notch entertainment. Shriner’s
Auditorium offers a full bar, lots of
great seating and an excellent venue to
spend a Sunday afternoon to remember
the victims of the Haitian earthquake.
Incredibly delicious BBQ will be
available from Backwoods Boy’s BBQ.

Many volunteers are needed for this
huge undertaking, including folks to
immediately begin distributing posters
around town as well as people on site
the day of the event. A silent auction is
also being considered in order to raise
additional funds. If you are
experienced with silent auctions and
would like to assume this project or if
you would like to volunteer in any
fashion, please send an email to
volunteer@AnActofLoveforHaiti.com.
Thank you for your support.
